Enter at Your Own Risk, My Beautiful Gambling Mind

Something that I Teach in all of My Sports Betting Books

A huge part of “Line Interpretation” that I try to convey in my books is also a mantra of mine: “Box Scores Don’t Lie!”

When the Pacers and Knicks met for the first time this season (11/04/09); the total attached to said game was (226.5), and the game went on to by a very easy under. The final score was Indiana 101 / Knicks 89.

And at the writing of this post (2:37EST) the total attached for tonight’s contest is (217). So, the first and most obviously question becomes: Is the 9.5 adjustment really enough; after their first meeting stayed under by 37 points?

My answer: I believe it is, and now I’ll elaborate.

You see, in meeting #1 on November 4th, these two teams combined for an abysmal 12 of 47 from behind the 3-point line, or a whopping 25.5%! Additionally, the Knicks only scored (33) total 2nd half points; after scoring (56) in the first half. THAT’S NEARLY A  41% “REGRESSION RATE, FROM ONE HALF TO ANOTHER!

“The Norm” (when a sub-.500 team scores 50 or more in the 1st half), is somewhere in the neighborhood of 18 to 20%. So there’s (12) more points (from their 190 meeting) we can safely assume; will be scored in tonight’s contest.

190 + 12 = 202.  But wait….What about the awful 3-point shooting in their first meeting (of 25.5%); shouldn’t we assume some marginally better percentage?  YES WE SHOULD!

The two teams combined seasonal averages is the barometer from which we should go by, but in conjunction with the overall league average of 38%. In this case, that percentile (combined) is @ 31%, or 5.5% higher/better than their first meeting. And, another 7% tacked onto the 5.5% = 12.5%.

In meeting #1 there were (36) total points scored from 3-point land, and as previously-mentioned; there was a combined 3-point FG% of 25.5. Now, if we add that additional 12.5 to the 25.5, we arrive at a 38-percentile for tonight’s game.

In meeting #1 there were (47) 3-pointers taken. So, making an assumption of (50) for tonight’s contest isn’t that drastic. If a total of  (50) 3-pointers are shot (tonight) @ 38%, that equates to (19) makes. 19 x 3 = 57, and that would be (21) more points than in meeting #1!!!!

202 + 21 = 223, which equals an OVER-217 for tonight’s contest!!!

But (as per usual), I’m on the Ov-209 as a part of a 3-team/8pt teaser bet.

A Semi-Free Winner for Tonight in the NBA

As a very basic rule of thumb, I don’t involve myself in any NBA games until after everybody’s played four games.

And there’s a reason for this: You see, whatever a team does within their first four games (from a Points Per Game perspective) is what they’ll do for the remainder of the season. So, after those first four games are played; I’m then able to establish a baseline (no pun intended), for each team in the NBA. Additionally (again, the basic rule of thumb), most teams only improve by about 5 to 6% from this establish baseline, from game 5 all the way through game 82, if at all.

Below, is a pretty wonderful example of what I’m talking about. The Sacramento Kings averaged precisely 101 points over their first four games. And in their last five, they’ve gone onto average 108. Now, a 6% improvement from 101 would be just under 108….SHOCKING!!!!

Now, let’s take their opponent for tonight, the Chicago Bulls: The Bulls started their first  four games on an average PPG of 88 points per game. And over the last five, they’ve had a marginal  improvement up to 90 points per game. A 1.7% improvement, obviously means there’s more in the proverbial tank,
for the Bulls. Not only for tonight, but for the remainder of the season.

Kings: 101..(1-3)….108….(4-1)
 Bulls: 88..(2-2)     90….(3-2)

And tonight, versus a team like Sacramento (a team that’s really not known for their defensive prowess), I suspect the Bulls will break 90 for fun, and possibly even 100. Which means, in 3-team/8pt teaser format,  one should be in love with the over 190!!!!

There’s a very old saying in the world of gambling: “Figures don’t lie, and liars figure.” Just take a look at these two teams over their last five games? Sacramento is averaging 108 and the Bulls are averaging 90. Add those two numbers together, and you’ll reach an aggregate of 198. This happens to be the natural line/total for tonight’s contest, again, SHOCKING!!!!

In closing this blog (and for the record, it’s roughly 8 hours until tipoff), I’m feeling sort of generous, and I want to leave you with one more little tip. A huge part of my success in gambling, is my ability to “forecast”.

Allow me to show you an example of what I’m talking about. Let’s assume for the moment that I’m correct in  my assumptions, and tonight’s game goes well over the 198 total: If indeed this happens, there is a great likelihood that the Kings will have broken 100 for the sixth straight time! So, in their next game, I  will make the assumption that they won’t. And if I’m correct (about tonight’s game), then, I’m almost positive, that they will play an under in their next outing. And, it’s also safe to assume that I might be “correct” in assuming that they will not break 100, in their next contest. Agree?

p.s. If you’d like the other (2) teams that I’m using in tonight’s 3-team/8pt teaser bet; you can receive the entire configuration (via email), for a mere $8.99. Just pay through PayPal on my www.totallyteasersonly.com
site.

www.lifetimesportspicks.com is hitting at a rate of 67%. But, in the past 9 days, the site has a record of (10-2), and last night the computer picked a 2-team/7pt teaser of: BALT-4.5 with the Under-46  (W)

From Tuesday through Saturday (Nov.3rd thru 7th), there are 47 games on the board at this moment. 27 of the 47 have a line of 7.5 or higher. And (14) of them, have a line of 14 points or higher! Where is the parity? I’ve been regurgitating the same thing  for about two years now; college football is becoming a very watered-down product.

But, as a professional gambler, this obvious lack of talent (which some teams possess,
more than others); can actually become a redeeming quality, that works in my favor.
Allow me to give you a shining example: Let’s use the BYU at Wyoming game as my example.

Now, BYU is one of the better two loss teams in the country. But, with that being said, they are no longer in a position to think about a BCS bowl game, correct? So, what’s their motivation? Last year up in Provo, they destroyed this same Wyoming team 44-0.

But, are they really “the same” Wyoming team? The answer is a resounding no!!!

Simply put, Wyoming has to winnable games and two games that they’ll probably lose (BYU and versus TCU), and if they’re able accomplish a (2-2) finish, they’ll become bowl eligible. Wyoming’s best player is a freshman quarterback by the name of Austyn Carta-Samuels. And without young Mr. Carta-Samuels this team would be (2-6), at best!

Now, just because I think that this is not a “winnable game”for Wyoming; one cannot
automatically assume that they are also not going to cover. Myself, along with my paying clients, will know the answer (or at least my professional opinion), to how I feel this game will ultimately turn out.

In closing, I leave you with some items worth pondering:

Is a freshman quarterback really worth 25+ points?

Or, are the oddsmakers making the assumption that BYU will not win the turnover battle, by a 6 to 1 margin (as they did in last year’s game), and that the 31 points derived from Wyoming’s six turnovers (in last year’s contest), won’t happen again,  on Saturday???

Again, I know the answers!!!

A Missed 3rd Quarter FG cost me from Making 46k More!!!! Read the blog below + heading (below this one) to understand.

3rd-5, UAB26 9:33 T. Vittatoe incomplete pass to the left
4th-5, UAB26 9:21

L. Barrett missed a 42-yard field goal

The above-mentioned happened during the 3rd quarter. It’s not the first time a kicker has hurt me, and it will unlikely be the last!!!!

I can remember most of my brutal beats with astonishing clarity, and this really isn’t one of them (for I still made over 13k for the day). If the missed FG would have happened with five minutes to play; that would have stung a lot more!

Does anyone remember when the former head coach of the Steelers, (Bill Cowher), who almost ran onto the field of play, on a MNF game versus the Jags?

The last-second game winning try by Pitt was blocked for a TD, and the Steelers blew the game & the cover!!! The Steelers were down by 2, and were getting 4! If the ball simply goes over the line of scrimmage; the Steelers would have covered.

Now, that, was a “BAD BEAT”!!!!  But, like I always say….

“Look what it takes to beat me!”

P.S.

I am indeed a part owner of www.lifetimesportspicks.com, and the part of today’s free pick ,that lost, in 2-team 7pt format, was mine. The James Misner kid picked NCST+17, and that was NEVER in doubt!

Even When I Lose; I Win!!!

mepic

I have a lot on my mind at the moment, and if this blog has the feel of being
all over the place, I apologize.

First order of business: Last night’s World Series, game two.
Now I can’t remember if I wrote the blog @ www.thetuttleway.com or on this one. But, I’m definitely adding the following angle to my follow-up best-selling baseball betting book “betting baseball ‘09″ (currently selling on Amazon.com).

The angle that I’m referring to is when a .500 or above team… Loses loses the night before by four runs or more, and they find themselves playing that same team the next day, or a lessor team, in game one of a new series.

Now in game one of the World Series, the Yankees lost 6-1. That would certainly meet the  above-mentioned criteria! Game two: Yankees win by a final score of 3-1, and couldn’t have looked any better in doing so.

And in closing on this topic; you might want to look up the blog I wrote about three months ago (here, within this blog), IN REFERENCE TO THE YANKEES WINNING IT ALL!!!!

Now onto some much juicier stuff….

Yes Virginia Tech fell apart, and my free 4-Teamer that I posted, is now a loser. But, for all my paying clients (namely my long-standing 25%ers), I told them about an epiphany that I had a few weeks ago, when Purdue beat Ohio State.
You see, Ohio State was installed as a 13.5 point favorite that day and it
was an early game.

So here was the epiphany that I had; when I realized Ohio State was about to go down to Purdue: I said “self”… ”We could have wagered on Purdue @ +600, or 6 to 1 odds, and been completely covered from such a debacle!!!

So with that being said: I told my players to hedge-out on NC @ +750!
Now at a place like sportsinteraction, you can bet a 4-teamer @ (-145), but get 13.5 points per selection. And, because I chose to use this Thursday night debacle (and because I thought it had the best chance of losing), it helped make the decision to use North Carolina on the Moneyline (as a hedge) that much easier.

Hypothetically speaking, let’s say you’re a client of mine, and you wagered 290 to win 200 on my teaser bet. At +750 (North Carolina Moneyline), how much would you have to wager to make a small profit?

The answer: A mere $40 or $50!!!
$40 = $300, and $50 = $375. Imagine, 50 bucks giving you complete peace of mind on the outcome of a football game, prior to its start time!?

Finally, I gave some of my paying clients the under 44. And the (7-0) half-time score created a very juicy 16-point “middle”. Now if you’re not quite sure what I’m talking about, allow me to elaborate.

With the score being 7-0 at halftime (on a 44 game total, at closing). That meant, that in order for the game to go over; they would have need to score (38) second-half points. Not likely, agreed?

But, the second-half total was only 20. Which means, that from 21 to 36 total points could have been scored in the second half, and the under 44 for the game line, would still be a winner!

Well, I also told some of my paying clients to do just that: Play the over 20, for the second half /tot-line. And the last I checked; (3-1) nights are not a bad thing!!! Especially, when a meager 50 dollar wager; canceled-out the one loser.

p.s. Remember people, I can always be reached @ jjtuttle131@yahoo.com or through my Skype# which is: 5616239720. I’m always looking for new clients, and I’m always trying to help others. It’s just a part of my Aquarian nature.

Blog #100….A Milestone

mepic

http://budurl.com/max3

As I’m about to start this NBA blog, and it is my 100th in less than three months of being online, I feel very proud. And in the short time span that this blog has been up and running, my Alexa ranking has gone from over 14 million to just under 5.6 million. So for that, I must give a heartfelt thank you to all that come to the site on a daily basis.

Now onto today’s lesson…

In my 15 years plus of doing this (sports betting) professionally, the NBA angle that I attribute the most/greatest success to: Is when a winning team (over .500) is coming off of a loss, and they’re playing for the second night of a back-to-back. And, the second night of the back to back (opponent), happens to be versus a team with a sub-.500 record. Well, such is the case with tonight’s Cleveland @ Toronto game.

http://budurl.com/max3

Now in accordance with my predictive of scoring model (and from the blog dated October 19), the final score this game should be 105 to 90, in favor of Cleveland.

Now we all know that 105+90 = 195. Additionally, Cleveland was one of those teams (indirectly mentioned, as an over .500 team, from that October 19 blog), that was supposed to have been able to score somewhere in the 104/106 range in their opener. Instead, they not only lost last night, but they only scored 89 the process.

http://budurl.com/max3

Furthermore, because of Cleveland’s gaudy 66 win record from last season, they only have a progress/regression rate of 3%. Which means, on a night in which they win and score less than 100 points; they should regress in ther next outing by approximately 3%, and that amount should be deducted. And hypothetically speaking, if they lose; yet score exactly 100; we must then assume that they will score 3% more, in their next outing.

http://budurl.com/max3

Now, in tonight’s game versus Toronto, they’re coming into this contest scoring 10 points less than the league average (and coming off a loss, which equals a state of progression), and it’s the second night of a back-to-back! So, is that 105 predictive scoring number truly accurate?

Well, let’s do the math…

89/99 = 10% less than last year’s league-wide aggregate (from last year). Additionally, 89/106 =  14% less than. Which means, Cleveland should score 24% more than they did last night.  89 divided by 4 = 22.25. 89 +22 = 111. Now, if we add 111+105 together and divide by 2; we will get/arrive at a final aggregate of 108.

Finally, if we deduct 10 points from each team (for the “rust factor”, since it’s still very early in the season), we would then arrive at a final score of 98 to 80.

98+80 = 178, and 108+93= 201….201+178= 379/2= 189.5

189.5 is the most mathematically accurate total that should be attached to this game!

My basic rule of thumb is this: If the opening total on this game is 5 or more points higher than this number, I will play the “under”. If it is five or more points lower, then, I would obviously play the under!

Typically, totals are not posted on NBA games until about five or six hours out. So let’s see how good my numbers are…. better still, let’s see who makes the better line???

PRE-HANDICAPPING NOTES: For Saturday in CFA, for 10/31/09

mepic

Below, is a weekly Sunday Night ritual of mine, and it has been for nearly 15 years!
I firmly believe that a lot of my successes can be directly attributed to this practice/discipline.

PRE-HANDICAPPING NOTES: For Saturday in CFA, for 10/31/09

 RUT at UCONN

Rutgers is a poor road team, and UConn played their guts out for their fallen teammate. I’m leaning towards the under here; both young quarterbacks are due to regress.

 Miami at Wake

-7 almost looks like a trap! But, Miami is way too fast for Wake!!! Better athletes = EASY SU WIN!  Great play, in 13 point format @ +6!!!!

 Central Mich at Boston College

The oddsmakers clearly undervalue Dan LeFevour, and would rather make a 25-year-old freshman quarterback a 4 point favorite- when home field advantage is clearly worth six points…Hmmmmmmmmmm?!?!  I must do more digging, but my gut tells me that this number is off!!!!

 Air Force at Colorado State

CSU has a clear advantage in weight on the offense and defensive line(s). But, was last week’s second half against San Diego State and aberration, or was their second half drubbing the real thing? In-state rivalry game, and if I’m not mistaken, Air Force has played a lot of unders this year? Be factual, make sure you check that out!

 Michigan State at Minnesota

It’s a good thing Minnesota’s no longer in the top 25: For the MSU head coach is now (1-8), LIFETIME, versus ranked opponents!!!! Might MSU be hungover, after such a heartbreaking loss to Iowa? Plus, I’m pretty sure Eric Decker is going to be out for this contest. He had a boot on (along the sidelines, for the whole second half of last week’s game), and Minnesota tried the platooning quarterback system, which I utterly despise!! It simply doesn’t work. Never has and never will!!!

p.s. Do a little digging to find-out how I made-out….lol  Additionally, I took ASU+1 (for the 2nd half line) versus Stanford; that was another wager that I made @ www.bodog.com , for a token dime.
